Packing Tips

Packing tip #1: Make it easy on yourself.

Before you dive in and start packing, determine the supplies you will need including bubble wrap, tape, packing paper, drop cloths, mattress and furniture covers, dust covers, locks, and assorted boxes from book to wardrobe size. To maximize storage space, use uniform-sized boxes. Protect your fragile goods by wrapping them with bubble wrap or packing paper and place them near the top of your storage space. Go easy on your back and keep the weight of all boxes under 30 pounds.

Heavy items such as books and tools should be packed in small boxes so they are easy to lift. Store heaviest boxes on bottom. All containers should be full before stacking to avoid collapsing. Clothing that ordinarily hangs in a closet should be packed in a wardrobe box. Many climate-sensitive items like books or clothes can be preserved perfectly in a climate-controlled unit.

Packing tip #2: Protect your breakables.

Always use plenty of packing paper for dishes and glasses. Wrap each item individually. Be sure to pack mirrors on edge, not lying flat and protect each mirror with strong cardboard.

Appliances should be clean and thoroughly dried before storing to prevent rust. Placing a container of salt inside freezers and refrigerators will help absorb moisture. Tape all appliance doors shut when moving, then remember to wedge doors open in storage.

Packing tip #3: DO NOT STORE COMBUSTIBLES OR PERISHABLES!

Combustible items include paint, cleaning fluids, gasoline, etc. Throw away anything that could possibly catch fire. Do not store food in open containers or any item that could attract rodents or pests.
